Newton is a city located in Catawba County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a population of approximately 12,500. It is the county seat of Catawba County and is part of the Hickory–Lenoir–Morganton Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Newton is positioned with Asheville to the northwest, Winston-Salem to the northeast, and Charlotte to the southeast, all within an hour-and-a-half drive. The gently rolling terrain blends into the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains offering residents and visitors an abundance of scenic attractions, a wealth of recreational options, and a temperate climate with four seasons that are as distinct as they are mild.

History

Newton was selected as the county seat in 1845 and was incorporated in 1855. The second largest city in the county, Newton has experienced a steady rate of growth since 1970, expanding from 7,600 to the current population of over 13,000 people.

The Newton Park and Recreation Department strives to enhance the quality of life to all citizens by providing a diverse and comprehensive program of recreational, educational and cultural leisure opportunities. These services aim to assist in the growth of the community through our open spaces, parks and recreational facilities while contributing to the citizens' physical, social and emotional well being through all aspects of life.
A full-time year-round recreation department offers programs for both young and old alike. A few of the organized activities include baseball, football, softball, tennis and swimming.

Catawba County Museum of History

The Catawba County Museum of History offers testimony to the hardy settlers of the Catawba River Valley and their resourceful descendants who carved a world-renowned furniture and textile empire out of the backwoods. The story is artfully displayed in the unique setting of the former Catawba County Courthouse, an imposing National Register Renaissance Revival structure built in 1924, on the square in downtown Newton.

The mission of the Catawba Science Center is to further people’s understanding of science and technology in the Western Piedmont through the use of educational programs, teaching collections and activities that emphasize physical participation.

United Arts Council of Catawba County http://www.artscatawba.org/
The United Arts Council of Catawba County was formed as the Hickory Arts Council in 1960.  The group was re-incorporated in 1979 as the Catawba County Council for the Arts and the new name was adopted in 2006 to reflect our partnerships with our vibrant cultural organizations and our supportive local government. Each year the United Arts Council conducts a United Arts Fund campaign which provides operating support for our Funded Affiliate organizations.

The Western Piedmont Symphony features active concert series at several local churches, Lenoir-Rhyne University and The Museum of Art
The String Quartet performs one concert per year in nearly each one of the elementary schools. The Chamber Orchestra performs a concert on 18 occasions preceded by music teachers using instructional materials to prepare the students.
